In January I had the pleasure of meeting Nelson and his human, Jenny, in Bernal Heights for a photo session.  Jenny had rescued Nelson as an senior dog, at 8 years old.  He came to her with some health issues like food allergies that had apparently gone unnoticed or uncared for by his previous family.  She even told me how he didn’t know how to walk up stairs when she brought him home.  Clearly his former family had other priorities.

Fortunatley for Nelson, Jenny made him a part of her life and lavished love and attention on him.  She took him to the beach, dog parks and car rides; making sure all his health concerns were addressed.  He was even considered for a Subaru commercial.  On the day we meet she explained how he loved Bernal Heights because he loved searching for gofers.  I got to see this for myself as Nelson popped his large head into anything even resembling a hole in the ground.

I was very sorry to hear that Nelson passed away unexpectedly this morning after a battle with cancer.  It was obvious to me in our short time together that Nelson was a special soul devoted to Jenny and she to him.  I am sorry to hear you left us so early Nelson, but am very glad I had the pleasure of meeting you.  I’m sure you are finding those gofers in doggie heaven.

The Dutch government has ended their 15-year ban on the pit bull breed and released a study on dog bites.  You can read the specifics here – http://blogs.dogtime.com/kc-dog-blog/2010/08/academic-study-on-dog-bites-in-the-netherlands-and-partially-why-they-repealed-their-breed-ban.

As stated in the article – “One academic study after another concludes the same thing. In order to affect dog bites, we must focus on education of parents and their children, and dog owners and dog behavior. It’s the only way. Focusing on anything else is merely a distraction and leads to the lack of knowledge that causes the problems in the first place.”  You think?

Lily is totally in favor of this point of view and so am I. :-D

There is a terrific and easy way to donate kibble each day to shelters.  Just answer the daily trivia question at http://www.freekibble.com/ and that is all there is to it.  Couldn’t be easier to help a shelter kitty or doggie.  This was all started by an 11 year old girl in Oregon, so if she can do this, we can click a link to help out.
